The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gatepost by the time the carrier gave up on the fell road, and you were the one who had to tell the three men in the taproom there would be no leaving before Thursday. He wagered you a shilling that the drifts would hold him till spring. You wagered him two stones. Two cherries from the jar, stems still green, the leaves pressed flat against the glass, and a clean spoon to pick them out with. He took the bet with his mouth full, spitting pits into his palm and lining them on the bar like tiny red lanterns, and the other two men pretended not to watch.
By morning the wind had dropped and the lane showed a pale track going over the top. Pell was already at the door in his muddy boots, shaking out his coat. You held out the shilling he had put down, and he looked at the bar, then at the window, and said the cherries were the sweeter debt. You kept the stones anyway. You wrapped them in a twist of muslin and put them in your apron pocket, where they stayed all winter.
In March you pressed them into a clay pot on the yard wall, and by the first warm week a single green leaf had pushed up through the dark soil, then another, as if the fruit had only been waiting for somewhere to be kept.
