Peacock feather on the top of a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A person sits on a carpeted floor with one hand resting on their shin, wearing a teal ring. A small peacock feather tattoo in teal and green, with dark outlines and an eye motif at its centre, sits on the top of the foot below the ankle. The warm-toned close-up keeps the tattoo as a small detail in the lower part of the frame.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the candle. My grandmother told this one at every wedding in our valley, and she swore a peacock feather once sat on a bride's foot and watched the whole ceremony. Not the bride herself, mind, but the feather, the eye at its heart that never blinked. The bride was Marta Hollin, a miller's girl who had run off twice from the church door before the banns were read, so her mother pinned a bit of blue glass to the hem of her dress and said it would keep her standing still.

The bridegroom, Tobias, was a fine enough boy who could not remember his own vows. He kept looking down at the floor, and Marta kept looking down too, and when they both bent for the same stray petal their heads knocked soft as eggs. The priest laughed. The feather did not. It stayed on the stone where the light came through the west window, and every time Marta shifted her weight the eye caught the sun and winked at the old women in the back pews.

That is the part my grandmother always stopped at, leaning in, until someone begged her to finish. So here is the end of it. Marta went home that night with the feather still caught in her hem, and when she pulled it free it was not a feather at all, only a curl of blue thread. But Tobias kept his promises better than his memory, and every spring after, he walked the long road to the mill and took her by the ankle to check she had not gone off again. That was the vow he managed without any words.
