Matching outline hearts on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together so that the inner wrists face the camera, each with a small heart drawn in a single dark outline. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the hearts are set at a similar height on each wrist. The image is in warm tones on a pale wooden background, with the skin and ink appearing black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been at the sink since six, the kettle ticking as it cools, when Nell comes down the back stairs with her sleeves shoved up and the blue biro already in her fist. Mrs Pargeter wants the breakfast plates counted before the Exeter coach pulls in, but Nell has other business. She takes your wrist in her cold fingers, turns it toward the scullery window, and draws a small heart there, pressing so hard you feel the nib in the bone.

You do the same to her. Your heart comes out crooked, one lobe sitting higher than the other, and she says it looks like a pair of ears and laughs until the ink smears onto the tea towel. Upstairs the lodgers are arguing about the tide tables. Down here the two of you hold your wrists together under the tap, the ink running a little blue at the edges, and agree that nobody needs to know anything about it.

In October Nell takes the ferry across the bay for a post in Bristol. You watch the boat until it is a smudge against the grey, then go back to the plates. Her letters come once a month, always short, always ending with a single drawn heart in the corner, a little wobbly, as if she has done it without looking.

You stand at the scullery sink on the first cold morning of the next year and hold your wrists together under the running tap. The two hearts face the same way, the old biro gone pale and faint, and the water runs over them both until you can no longer tell which line was drawn first.
