Small X and circle wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with the inner wrists turned toward the camera. A small black letter X sits on the left wrist and a small black open circle sits on the right wrist, both drawn with thin, even linework. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the plain cream background keeps the focus on the two marks.

The post boat from Kelda came in on Tuesdays when the swell allowed, and Ada Fenwick had long since stopped pretending she was not waiting for it. She sorted the sacks on the kitchen table of the sorting office, Mrs Pring's bread still warm beside the ledger, and checked every envelope for one hand she would know anywhere, the looping N of her sister Nell's surname.

Nell had gone south the autumn the herring failed, and their letters had kept to a rule they invented on the pier with a stub of pencil. Every sheet ends with an X for a kiss and an O for the hand that holds it, the ring closed so nothing can slip out. Ada had kept her side for eleven years, and Nell's letters had always arrived with their crosses and rings, neat as stitching along a hem.
This week there was only one envelope in Nell's writing, and it ended in a single ring. No cross. Ada read it standing by the stove, then read it again, hunting for the sentence that would explain the gap. Nell wrote about a flat above a bakery, a job at a cannery, a window that faced a wall and a man who whistled hymns badly. Nothing about why she had stopped.
Ada took the pencil from the drawer and wrote her reply by the lamp. At the bottom she drew her cross, firm and dark, then made the circle beside it and left the last stroke open, a gap no wider than a fingernail. It was the first ring she had ever sent unclosed. She sealed the envelope, weighed it in her palm, and carried it down to the pier for the boat that would take it south.
