Small matching fine line tattoos on four feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Four bare feet are arranged in a loose circle on a dark background, each carrying one small tattoo. The designs are a crescent moon, a thin arrow pointing up and to the right, a small outlined heart and a small outlined triangle. The linework is thin and black, with no shading, and the composition is a close top-down view of the feet.

Thursday. Rain on the tarpaulin over Stall 14 since seven, the sort that bounces off the cobbles and soaks your boots from underneath. Sold nothing until gone eleven, then four girls came running under the awning from the bus shelter, shrieking about the weather and arguing over the tray of tin charms I'd been meaning to bin. I told them the lot for a pound. The tallest, Nell, said they wanted something that matched without any one of them being the copy. So I dug out four pieces of bent pewter: a crescent moon, an arrow, a small outlined heart and a small outlined triangle. Each no bigger than a fingernail, all stamped from the same sheet, so they looked like they belonged to one set.

They laid them on the wet trestle in a ring and kept turning them so each one pointed somewhere different. The arrow kept going to Nell. She said it pointed home, which it didn't, it pointed up and to the right, towards the Co-op sign. Her sister Bea said that was the same thing if you were soggy enough. They argued about who got which until the rain eased off, then they split the lot without a word and ran for the 14 bus.
Friday. Market sodden again, nobody about. This morning the tray was empty except a bus ticket folded into a square on the trestle. On the back, in biro: Moon's for the next one. Arrow's gone north. Ta for the tin.
I've decided that's the best sale I've made in nine years on this pitch.
