Small cross tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black cross is drawn with thin, even linework on the side of an ankle and heel. The photograph is black and white, with soft shadows around the bone and a dark background. The cross sits near the centre of the frame and is the only subject, with plenty of empty skin around it.

Dear Frank,

The 6.40 came in forty minutes late again and Mr Hebden stood on the down platform with his watch open in his palm like a communion wafer, waiting for someone to tell him it was all right. Nobody did. I have taken over the ticket hatch since Tuesday, when they sent the boy off to the Army, and I am learning that a railway runs on people saying small things to each other very precisely.
There is a cross pencilled on the inside of the hatch frame, just above the brass rail where the change tray slides. Small, upright, the arms level, drawn so thin and even you would think a ruler had done it. I asked old Mrs Pryce who cleans the waiting room whose it was and she only said, "Keep the kettle on and don't rub it out." So I haven't.
Yesterday a man in a grey overcoat bought a single to Carlisle and asked whether trains still stopped at Ais Gill in the snow. I said they did when they were told to. He laughed, then looked at the cross, then paid in coppers he had counted into little piles on the ledge. He reminded me of you.
Write when you reach the crossing. Tell me if the signal box has the stove going, and whether the men still sing on the night shift. I will leave the cross as it is, and each time the hatch slides open I will think of whoever measured a line that straight and left it for the next pair of hands.
Love, Ada
