Small crescent moon on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon is tattooed on the side of a person's ankle, drawn in a thin, dark black line with a simple, clean shape. The skin is pale and smooth, and the ink sits in the lower part of the frame just above a black leather lace-up shoe with a chunky heel. The background is soft pink and the shoe rests on a cork block, so the small tattoo is the clear focal detail.

The lighthouse keeper at Gullhaven had a habit of counting the dark, and the year the crescent went missing from the sky, the harbour council sent a man from Hull to fix it. He arrived on the Tuesday ferry with a leather case of brass tools and a pair of shoes that clicked on the wet cobbles like a clock losing its nerve. Mrs Pryce at the chandlery gave him a bed above the nets and asked no questions, because questions cost money in a town where the fish had been thin since spring.

He spent three nights on the breakwater with a theodolite, swearing at the cloud. On the fourth he climbed the lighthouse stairs with a bucket of white paint and found the old keeper, Dafydd Lloyd, sitting in the lamp room with his boots off and his feet in a basin of cold seawater. The moon, Dafydd explained, had not gone anywhere. It had only been lent out, one sliver at a time, to the women who walked the harbour wall after their husbands had sailed, and they kept it in their pockets against the dark.

The surveyor did not believe him until the next night, when he saw a thin silver curve come up from the lapping tide and hook itself gently onto the heel of Mrs Pryce's boot as she went home. He wrote nothing in his report. He simply took the ferry back, and in the morning the sky over Gullhaven was whole again, though the chandler's ankle carried a small dark crescent for the rest of her life, a debt she never once asked anyone to pay.
