Green dinosaur tattoo on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A small dinosaur resembling a T-rex, with a green body and yellow, orange and blue markings, is tattooed on the outer calf. The bold outlines and flat fills give it a simple, illustrative look. The image is cropped to the legs and boots, set against a bright pink wall with a light wooden plinth below.

The cook found the dinosaur on the ninth day out from Stornoway, curled in the flour bin and snoring like a bellows. It was no bigger than a hen, green as bottle glass, with bands of yellow and orange along its back and a blue stripe that the cook swore was the colour of the sea on a good morning. Nobody on the Mary Ross had seen it come aboard. The mate said that was the trouble with boats that carried nothing but sheep and letters, because a thing that wanted feeding would always find its own way in.

The old men on the island had a tale for such creatures. A beast that rides a ship is a passenger, they said, and a passenger must be fed and named or it will eat the rigging out of spite. So the cook named it Hector, after a dog he had loved in Leith, and gave it his salt herring and the heel of every loaf. By the second week it had grown to the size of a collie and stood on the forecastle with its tail hooked over the rail, watching the gulls as if it had already decided which of them owed it money.
The storm came off Rockall on a Tuesday. Waves stood higher than the funnel and the sheep below began to bawl. Hector walked the length of the deck on his stubby legs, stepping over the broken spars, and sat down at the bow. The cook swore the swell flattened beneath him like a dropped sheet. When the light came grey and thin over Lerwick, the mate found the dinosaur asleep on a coil of rope, one blue-striped flank rising and falling, and in the ship's log, under the cargo, he wrote the word Passenger and underlined it twice.
