Small crescent moon on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black crescent moon sits on the upper chest, close to the collarbone. The linework is clean and the ink is a single dark tone with no shading. The tight crop shows the skin against a light blue t-shirt neckline and a tan leather seat behind.

The moon had been caught on the mill weir for three nights before anyone thought to fetch Old Ada Penrose, who had always been the one to deal with things the water brought down. She came with a lantern, a basket and a sack of salt, and found the moon lying in the shallows like a dropped coin, only a sliver of it showing above the silt.

Ada did not pull it out. She knelt on the wet stones and talked to it the way her mother had talked to the bees, reciting the names of everyone in Thornmere who had ever looked up and wished for something. Then she cut a single curl from its edge with her mother's bone knife, the only blade the village trusted, and wrapped the curl in black thread.
She gave the thread to Wilf Harker's boy, who had been sent to fetch her, and told him to keep it close. She rubbed a pinch of soot into the little cut the blade had left on his chest, just where the shirt collar met the bone, and pressed the curl down until it held. When the moon rose again that night it was whole and bright over the weir, and it did not once look down to check the water for the piece it had lost.
