Two small heart tattoos on shoulder and chest
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two tiny solid black hearts are visible on the skin, one on the upper chest near the collarbone and one on the shoulder. The hearts are filled in with dense black ink and have crisp edges, with no visible shading or additional linework. The image is a warm-toned close-up showing only the shoulder, neck and upper chest, with a dark top and some long hair at the edge of the frame.

Dear Tom, the rain has been coming sideways across the market since Tuesday, and the awning over Ferriter's button stall has finally given up, so I have been sheltering under the fishmonger's canopy with a box of wet buttons on my knee. You'll laugh, but I found the pair of them yesterday in the bottom of a tin marked Assorted, Lot 9. Two little black hearts, cast iron or something close to it, no bigger than a fingernail, the paint worn through to grey on one edge.

Mrs Ferriter wouldn't take money for them. She said they'd been sewn onto a wedding coat in 1961, and the coat was the only thing her husband ever bought her that didn't need mending. Then she cried into her gloves and said I should keep them both or neither. So I have. I'm not sure who she was thinking of, and I didn't ask.
I sat on the upturned crate for an hour working out which one should go to you. The gutters kept filling and the fishmonger kept shouting about cod. In the end I wrapped the first in tissue and the second in a page torn from the market guide, and I've enclosed the page, though you'll have to squint past the adverts for bus times.
Post yours back when you're ready and I'll sew mine onto the lapel of the grey coat. Then we'll both be wearing the same small weather in different towns. Love, Nell.
