Small cross on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple black cross sits on the back of a woman's neck, photographed from behind with her hair twisted into a low ponytail. The cross is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading, and it is set slightly off centre near the hairline. The background is a red brick wall and a maroon sweater, with the lighting soft and natural.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on the Salt Wash road could agree who had put the first cross up, only that it was there before the telegraph poles and before the tin roof on the Ashby place. It was two lengths of cedar, one longer than the other, nailed where the track bent round the dry lake. Drivers slowed for it the way you slow for a dog asleep in the road.

Mae Corrigan drove the mail truck out that way every Tuesday for eleven years. She said the cross was never straight. Every spring the sand shifted, and every spring she stopped and knocked it upright with the heel of her boot, and on the way back she would find the crossbar had turned a little towards the north, as though something out there had given it a nudge. She stopped counting the nudges after the third winter.

The summer the well at Hollis Flat went bad, a boy came walking up from the south with a canvas bag and no water. Mae gave him the last of her flask and asked where he was bound. He said he was looking for the place where the cross pointed. She laughed and told him it pointed at nothing but Nevada.

He walked on anyway. Three days later she found him sitting in the shade of the cedar with his bag open and a pencil in his hand. He had drawn the cross on the back of a seed packet, thin and even, the way you would draw a road on a map, and beside it a small dot where he had sat. Under the dot he had written the name of a town she had never heard of. Mae folded the packet into her shirt pocket and drove him there herself.
