Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person wearing a denim jacket and cream top holds their arm across their body, showing a single black cross tattoo on the inner forearm near the wrist. The lift in Tern House stopped between the sixth and seventh floors on a Tuesday, and by Thursday Maureen had the black gloss tin open on the landing. She had never trusted the council's stickers. They peeled, and the men who came out to fix things read them quickly and got them wrong.

So she did it her own way. Two strokes, the upright longer, with the short bar set high, the way her mother had marked the bread bin and the back gate. Fourteen years of caretaking had taught her that a cross on the wall meant somebody had been there and knew what was wrong. Engineers came to Tern House and looked for it first, and they never asked her why.

Her grandson Kieran, home for half-term and bored of his phone, watched from the stairwell. 'Nan, it's not a sign of anything. It's just a cross.' She wiped the brush on the rag. 'It's a sign that I was here and it wasn't my fault.' He laughed, then stopped, because the lift shuddered and the cable hummed somewhere above them like wire in wind.

When the crew came up at dusk they found the stuck car, freed it in twenty minutes and left without a word. Maureen stood with the tin under her arm and painted one more on the wall by the bins, low down, where nobody would think to look. It was for the lift in the ground-floor lobby, the one that had never broken, and she reckoned it was about time someone told it that it was being watched.
