Small cross on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black cross sits centrally on the back of the neck, drawn with clean, even linework and no shading. The subject's hair is pulled over one shoulder and held in one hand, and the background shows a tattoo studio interior with a red wall and framed artwork. The tattoo is the clear focal point against the soft skin tones.

The forge at Lower Wrenhall had been cold since Easter, and Ada Pryce did not light it until the Tuesday the bridge gave way. She went down to the water with a hand-cart and came back with the iron nails, twenty-two of them, bent and blackened, and set them on the anvil one after another until the room smelled of scorched hair.

Her brother Eli had been carried off by the flood the spring before, and nobody had found him. The vicar said the river kept what it wanted. Ada did not believe the river wanted anything, but she believed in iron, and she believed a thing made properly would hold its shape. So she took the longest nail, heated it until it was the colour of a plum, and folded it on itself with two hammers until it made a cross no wider than her palm.

She wore it on a cord for a year. On the day she finally pressed it into the wet clay beside the lych gate, the children from the school came down the lane to watch, and the smallest, a girl called Mercy Dunn, asked whether it would rust. Ada said it would take a hundred winters and not one more. Mercy nodded as if that settled a debt and ran off to tell the others.

Nobody noticed the cross had gone until the spring floods came again. When the water went down, Mercy was standing by the gate with a muddy palm held out, and on it sat the nail-cross, black and clean as the day it was made. She said she had found it in the reeds. Ada took it and closed her hand around it, and did not ask how far the river had carried it, or how far it had carried anything else.
