Small cross on the back of the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A person is photographed from behind, with long hair pulled into a loose ponytail over one shoulder. A small, simple black cross sits on the back of the neck, drawn with clean, solid lines. The image is monochrome with a dark background, and the tattoo is the clear focal point at the centre of the frame.

Nobody in Dunmere would own to it. The vicar's boy said it was foxes. Old Pell said it was the dead from the churchyard come up for a supper, and told her to tie a cross of hazel sticks on the gate to keep them out. So she did, two lengths bound with green wool, and she pushed the foot of it into the soil where the latch met the post.

In the morning there was a sprig of rosemary on the step, tied to the cross with a thread that was not hers. She stood a long while looking at it. Then she fetched a second stick from the shed, cut a few leeks she had been meaning to sell, and left them on the step beside the rosemary.

The carrots stopped coming after that, but the rosemary never did. By spring the hazel cross had rooted at its foot, and Hester let it stand.
