Tom had been aboard the Marguerite since March, paying out copper and gutta-percha across the sea bed, and his wires arrived the way all ship telegrams did, charged by the word and counted by the clerk with a pencil. A sentence about weather and tides cost more than a sailor's wage for a day. He had learned to be stingy. Every message from him was the same single word, sent from somewhere a thousand fathoms down.

The duty superintendent, Mr Gorringe, frowned over the first few slips and asked whether the man had gone soft in the head. Ada told him nothing was wrong. She knew exactly what a word weighed. On the sixth morning Gorringe simply stamped the form paid and went back to his ledger without a word of his own.

When the splice was finally made mid-ocean, the last wire came through longer than usual, with a second word tacked on the end. Ada read it twice, then tapped her reply down the line in dots and dashes, letter by letter, thin and unbroken as the cable itself. It was the same word she had always sent back, and the only one the company would never have thought to charge her for.
