Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a finger on a white bedsheet showing a small tattoo of an arrow pointing up and to the right, with a short dotted line running alongside it near the knuckle. The linework is thin and dark, and the photo is in black and white. The finger fills the frame against soft, shadowed fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm taught me to read a sheet before I was allowed to touch a needle. Every vellum leaf has a spine side and a flesh side, he said, and the hair side always wants to curl away from you, so you mark the grain with a little arrow in lead before you cut. I was eleven. My hands were too quick for patience and he knew it.

The dotted line was my own invention, and I was proud of it for a week. Where a fold must fall, I pricked a row of holes with the awl so the bone folder could find its way without a ruler. Brother Anselm pretended not to notice when I did it on the abbot's psalter. He only said the holes would show under the gilt, and that I would have to learn to live with what I had made.

The winter the snow closed the valley road, we bound forty books for a merchant in Lyon who never paid. We worked by one lamp in the cold room under the bell tower. My arrow stood at the head of every gathering. Whenever I lost my nerve over a difficult spine, I looked for it and followed it, as if the grain itself had decided the way.

When the thaw came, Anselm took the last quire from my hands and turned it over. He ran his thumb along the pinholes and smiled. Then he showed me how the arrow pointed toward the bell tower, where the rope hung still and the light came in sideways. Go up, he said, and mind the steps. I went up. The stairs were wet, and I still think of that arrow whenever I decide where a fold should fall.
