Small black cross on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind, with her dark hair pinned up in a loose bun, shows a small solid black cross tattoo between her shoulder blades. The cross has clean, thin linework and is filled with black ink only. The dark background and blue top frame the skin, placing the tattoo at the centre of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lettering on the Dodgem sign had flaked to nothing by Margate, so Edie Marsh took the brush from the tin without asking anyone's leave. Her father had painted every board on the Marsh and Daughters Travelling Fair for forty years, and his hand had started to tremble in the spring. She could copy a letter. She could not yet copy the gaps between them, which he always said were where a sign breathed.

On the last night before the fields at Yalding, a stranger in a grey mackintosh bought a coconut shy ticket and watched her work. He asked why she was painting a small black cross on the exit door of the ghost train, no halo, no shadow. She said the door needed a mark so the men who oiled the rails would know which one to stop at. He laughed at that and did not argue.

Her father found the cross in the morning and said nothing for an hour. Then he thinned the black with turpentine until it was nearly grey, and drew a second line through the first, so fine that the crossing sat exactly on the grain of the wood. 'Thin lines last,' he said. 'Heavy ones go to sludge in the rain.'

They left the field before the ghost train ran again. Years later, when Edie had a fair of her own and a crew who called her Miss Marsh, she still painted that cross on every new door, and never once explained it to the men who stopped there.
