Small crown and cross on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with fingers held together against a dark background. A detailed crown with a heart-shaped gem and shaded jewels sits on one finger, and a small, simple cross is placed lower down on the adjacent finger. The linework is fine and the shading is soft grey, with the whole image in black and grey tones.

You find the crown in the tin of loose buttons on the third morning of the August let, a small silver thing with a heart-shaped garnet set in its front, dulled from years in a drawer. Mrs Pargeter is on her knees scrubbing the hallway tiles when you hold it up, and she does not look round. Leave it where it was, she says. That belonged to the lodger in number four. He paid until the end of the month, so the tin is his too.

He has not come back since the Sunday storm. The register shows his name in her looping hand, a fortnight of teas and a note about the bath geyser, and beside it a small cross in pencil that you take for a smudge until she tells you the old boarders marked the nights they had settled up. Outside, the sea wall is slick with weed. Past the groyne, where the shingle goes grey and the tide has left its ridges, the rusted iron post the lodgers called the altar still stands, and you think about a man who would leave a crown in a button tin and walk out into the wind without it.
You go back up the stairs with the hallway light behind you. Number four is open. The bed is made tight, the way he made it, and on the window sill is a second cross, scratched into the paint with a hairpin, fresh enough to still look bright.
You take the crown from your pocket after all and set it beside the scratch, and you tell yourself it is only so the morning sun will find it first.
