Matching crown tattoos on wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people hold their wrists side by side, each with a small crown tattoo in black ink. The crown on the left is a solid silhouette with pointed tips and dots, while the crown on the right is drawn in an outline with a banded base. The plain background is dim and the ink is the only strong colour, so the crowns stand out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The thaw came late that year, so the two boys carried water from the trough themselves, one bucket each, the way their father had before the fever took him. Halvard, the elder, went first across the yard with his shoulders hunched under the weight. Tam followed in his prints, which were smaller and kept losing the track.

The crown had been their grandmother's, a thin silver thing that fitted a child's head. The winter before, Halvard had hung it on the well hook to show Tam how a king would look, the rope slipped, and the crown went down into the black water and stayed there. The well was too deep and the rope too short, so the farm carried on without it, the way farms do.

In February the frost was so hard the ewes would not leave the byre. Tam stood at the well with his fingers tucked under his arms and said he would go down himself. Halvard told him that was a stupid thing to say, then pulled off his gloves and knotted the rope round his own wrist before anyone could argue. Tam went down hand over hand, and came up with the crown in his teeth, its silver gone the colour of old slate.

They could not polish it, so they did not try. Halvard pressed his thumb into the tarnish until the middle went solid and dark, and Tam kept the thinner rim, the one you could see daylight through. At the trough they held their wrists together over the ice, the way they had since they were small, and the water beneath gave back two black crowns, one heavy and one hollow, both of them still theirs.
