Now Tobias had a bad habit. Every time the Mary Jane went out past the breakwater, he'd stand at the end of the quay and not come home until the lamps were lit in the chapel. Isla got tired of watching him stand there. So one evening she took the squid-ink pot from the net loft, a dip of pine tar, and a pin from her mother's sewing box, and she drew a small heart on the inside of her own wrist. Double-lined, the way the old fishwives used to mark their buckets, so it would stay put through salt and scrubbing.

When the Mary Jane came limping in at dawn with her sail torn to ribbons, Tobias came running down the stones and caught his daughter's hand before she could hide it. He turned her wrist to the grey light. He didn't say a word. He just pressed his own rough knuckles against that little heart, and the two of them stood there while the gulls argued over the catch.
