Small crown tattoos on the backs of two hands
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on white bedding, with a larger crown tattoo on the back of the upper hand and a smaller crown near the knuckles of the lower hand. The crowns are drawn in black ink with simple outlines and light shading in the larger design, and the smaller one is a compact outline. The soft white background and warm skin tones keep the focus on the ink, with a pearl bracelet, a chainmail-style bracelet and a jewelled ring visible.

The lost property office at Hollin Bridge had one rule Dorothy Vane never bent: nothing left on the platform was ever thrown away. So when the 7.12 from Leeds gave up a silver chainmail cuff in the carriage rack, she logged it, bagged it and set it on the shelf beside a string of pearls nobody had claimed since March.

Two sisters came to the hatch on the Thursday, the younger one holding her sleeve over her wrist as if the cold might steal something. Nell and Bea Hartley had argued all the way from Skipton about a bracelet their gran had left them, and Bea swore she had put it in her bag before the train stopped. Dorothy asked them to describe it. Nell said there was a knot in the clasp where somebody had mended it with fishing line. Bea said it had a little fault in one pearl, a grey one, near the end.
Dorothy took down the bag. The knot was there. So was the grey pearl. She laid the bracelet on the counter between them and neither sister reached for it straight away, because they were both looking at the ink on the backs of their own hands, the small crowns they had drawn on at fourteen with a Biro and a dare, and never let fade.
Bea picked it up first. Nell held out her hand, palm down, and Bea fastened the clasp around her sister's wrist without a word. Dorothy stamped the form, slid the receipt across, and wrote in the margin, for no reason the system would ever ask for: returned, with crowns.
