The bride, Ella Marrow, had told him what she wanted. Not a crown for her head, she said, since she had no head for kings, but one that would sit where her husband could see it when she lifted her hand to pour the ale. He drew three points, a band beneath them, and the lines that joined them, pressing hard so the charcoal would hold. Then he rubbed soot into the lines with his thumb until they looked like stitching.
At dawn she came down the lane in a borrowed shawl. The smith had boiled a needle in the kettle and asked her grandmother to hold the girl's hand steady. It hurt less than he feared, the grandmother said afterwards, because Ella spent the whole while counting the points under her breath, one, two, three, the way children count to see who will win.
When the vows were done, her husband took her hand, looked at the little black crown and laughed. A king's mark, he said, so I had better behave. Nobody in Cold Harrow ever argued with the smith about the price of anything small again.
