Small crown tattoos on clasped fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together against a white painted brick wall, with a beaded bracelet visible at one wrist. Two small black crown tattoos sit on separate fingers, one a simple outline crown and the other a solid filled silhouette. The ink is dark and crisp, and the close framing keeps the tattoos as the focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruth, you will not believe what Dennis went and did at the Harvest Fair on Saturday. The travelling tattooist had set up behind the bunting tent, and when I came round the back with the lemonade, there he was on an upturned crate, grinning like a boy who had nicked the church bell.

The man who did the work was called Sol, a thin fellow with a Woodbine tucked behind one ear and a tin of ink that smelled of struck matches. He asked which finger, and Dennis picked the one beside the ring finger because he said the ring finger was too obvious. Sol sketched the first crown in blue pencil, plain outline, its points like the tines of a fork. The second he filled solid, black as the Mill Road at midnight. When I asked why, Sol shrugged and said one crown always keeps the shine and the other keeps the weight, and that was the arrangement most couples found easiest.

I told Dennis he was soft in the head, and he told me I had been crying since the first needle went in, which was a lie, though not by much. The lamps were coming on along the high street and the brass band was playing something sad by the bandstand. We stood there with his fingers laced through mine, the beaded bracelet from his cousin's stall clicking against my wrist every time he squeezed.

So now you know. I am writing this with my left hand because Dennis has the right one wrapped in a clean tea towel and keeps holding it up to show the postmistress. Come home in October. Bring the good scissors, and tell Mother I have not swallowed the bell.
