A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody had told the red balloon it was meant to be sold, so it kept climbing past the dodgems and out over the harbour wall. Pell watched it from the end of the picnic field, her trunk curled around a tent peg, and felt the old itch in her feet that her grandmother called the going feeling.

Her sister Ottilie was already working at the knot. "You'll never reach it," she said, which was true, and Pell took the end of the string in her trunk anyway, because string had never once stopped her from trying.

They went down to the shingle at dusk, two grey elephants with the fair's lights behind them, and the balloon dragged them along the tideline like a kite that had forgotten it was a kite. At the lighthouse steps the wind dropped. The balloon hung still over the water, and the sea went quiet beneath it, and the sisters stood with their trunks lifted, each holding her side of the same string.

Pell could never afterwards say how long they stayed like that, while the lamp swept round above them and the fishing boats came in one by one. Ottilie tied the string to the iron rail, and the balloon turned slowly towards the harbour, showing its red face to every boat that passed.
