By the third week of August the wasps had found the windfalls before you did, so you worked the lower rows at first light, filling crates while the dew still sat on the grass. Mr Aubrey Penhallow followed behind on his bad hip with a blackthorn stick, counting the crates aloud as if the orchard owed him arithmetic. He had not walked the Discovery rows in six years, and nobody had told him he could stop.

On the ninth morning your boot turned over something that was not fruit. It was a clear stone no bigger than a lentil, cut in a dozen small faces, and it caught the sun so hard you had to look away. Mr Penhallow took it from your palm with two fingers and went quiet. His wife, Ada, had lost her stone in this grass the summer they were courting, he said, and they had combed the rows on their knees until the first frost. He turned it over slowly. "Forty-one years," he said. "Ada always said it would turn up once it had finished being useful to someone else."

He gave it back to you, which surprised you more than the stone had. "Keep it till the press is done," he said, "then put it somewhere the morning can get at it." So you carried it in your pocket through the last crates, and at dusk you set it on the sill of the packing shed. The low sun came through the open door and broke across the floorboards in a scatter of small bright shapes, one for every rung of the ladder Ada must have climbed.
