Small capital lettering on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a man's hand, with a small tattoo of a few capital letters on the side of the ring finger. The lettering is fine and dark grey to black, set in a simple serif-like form. The hand is in sharp focus against a dark background, with a wristwatch and a dark suit cuff at the wrist.

Mrs Abernethy had the proof sheet pinned under the lamp when the boy came up the stairs with ink still on his thumbs. "Not the R," she said, before he could speak. "The R is fine. It's the A that's wrong, and you know it, because you set it upside down twice on Tuesday."

He took the case of capitals from the shelf. They were lead, no bigger than a grain of rice, and each one had a nick or a worn shoulder that let you tell them apart in the dark. Most of the shop worked by feel before the gas came on at five. He had learned the letters by their edges, the way other boys learned the names of ships.
The job was a card for the Grayling Dock Company, four letters on cream stock, to be pressed by seven. Mrs Abernethy wanted them small and close, nothing that shouted. The ink, she said, should look as though it had been there longer than the paper.
He set the last letter at twenty to six and checked it under the glass. The A sat true. Down on Cable Street the bakers were lifting their trays, and the smell of bread came up through the floorboards. When the impression came off clean, Mrs Abernethy turned the card to the window and read the four letters aloud, slowly, the way she read a will. They spelled nothing a dock clerk would know. "Good," she said. "Now it belongs to us."
