Maren Ostrell had cut stones for thirty years in the market town of Harrowmere, and she could tell a flaw from a lie by the way light fell through it. The Duke's clerk brought her a stone the size of a sparrow's egg and asked her to find the fault in it before the wedding. She held it to the window of her workshop above the fish market and saw nothing but clouds.

"It is perfect," she said. "That is the trouble." The clerk did not understand, so she showed him the facets she had counted in the glass, forty-one of them, each one turning the sky a different shade of grey. A perfect stone, she explained, had no reason to be kept in a locked box. Someone had wanted it seen only in the dark.

She sent him away with a bill and kept the stone overnight. At dawn she set it on the lathe and took off one thin sliver from its crown, so the light would have a door to walk through. Then she sat with her tea going cold while the fishwives shouted below, and waited for the clerk to return with his lord's face and his lord's fury.

He came back before noon, alone, and asked why she had spoiled it. She pointed to the window. Where the sky had been a single grey, the stone now threw a small bright crossing of light onto the dusty floor, and it lay there like a footprint no one could lift away. "Tell him it is finished," she said, and swept the shavings into her palm.
