Small arrow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black arrow pointing downwards is tattooed on the middle section of a finger on a clenched fist. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The background is a soft, out of focus lilac tone, with the fist filling most of the frame and a silver band ring on the adjacent finger.

Market day in Hebden Cross, and the rain came sideways over the stalls, so Ellen Marr sold her arrows from under a tarpaulin that sagged like a wet sail. Nobody bought archery kit in weather like this unless they had a match on Sunday, and the Whitsun shoot had been cancelled twice already. She had nine dozen shafts wrapped in brown paper and one she kept back, the one her grandfather had told her never to sell.

The stranger came at the noon bell. He wore a waxed coat and a plain silver band on his hand, and he asked whether she could make a shaft that fell straight down. She said every shaft fell down eventually. He said he meant one that would go into the ground and stay there, point first, the way a plumb line settles. She took him for a surveyor. She had not thought about the old boundary stone at the edge of the common, the one with the arrow cut into its face.

Her grandfather had carved that arrow the winter the mill burned, to show the parish line ran there and not a yard further. Everyone in the village knew it. Nobody had ever called it a downward arrow. The stranger paid in coins heavy with rain and walked off towards the common, and Ellen watched his figure dwindle past the gate until the mist swallowed it.

That evening she wrapped the kept arrow in paper and carried it up the hill herself. The stone was black with wet. She set the shaft point-down in the soft earth at its foot, where the carving pointed, and pressed the moss back over it with her thumb. By morning the rain had stopped, and the arrow stood there straight as a plumb line, marking nothing that anyone could see.
