Small fox on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a fox, shown in profile with its bushy tail curling along the base, sits on the inner wrist of a raised hand. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, with only a few dark areas on the ears and tail tip. The ink is black on pale skin, and the blurred brown backdrop keeps the focus on the small design.

The fox walked into the reunion in the church hall at Hensley Cross the same week the old school was pulled down, and nobody thought it strange until it sat under the piano and waited. Nell Partridge saw it first. She had taken the long way round from the car park, and the long way had made her late for the speeches.

Her old classmates were polite about the fox and less polite about each other. Dennis Mole had cheated at the spelling bee in 1978 and still wanted it said aloud. Ruth Carew had kept a ledger of who owed whom for lunch money, and the ledger was in her handbag. The fox listened to all of it with its head on one side, then rose and trotted to the coat pegs by the door, where a child's red mitten hung on a hook nobody had used since before decimal coins, gone stiff and faded with the years.

Nell took the mitten down. It was hers. She had lost it in the snow on the last day of term and cried all the way home, and her mother had said a fox would have it by morning. The fox had sat with her under the bus shelter that afternoon, Nell remembered now, its tail wrapped round its feet against the cold, and it had not left until the bus came.

She pulled the mitten on. Across the room Dennis stopped mid-sentence. The fox turned, showed its pale chest, and walked out into the car park with its tail curling low, as if it had only come to return something. Nell found she was smiling, and the ledger in Ruth's bag had, for once, nothing in it that needed settling.
