Small dolphin tattoo on lower back
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A small dolphin leaps upward in a single curved outline in dark grey, with a soft pink or lilac wash filling the body. The tattoo sits on tanned skin at the lower back, above the waistband of light blue denim, and is the only point of detail in a bright, sunlit scene. The blue sky and sea fill the background, and the shallow focus keeps the skin and tattoo sharp.

The harbour master of Vell had a rule that no boat left before the tide turned, and Ilse Maraneth had broken it every morning for eleven years. She was the only one who fished the outer shoals at dawn, when the water was still the colour of pewter and the gulls had not yet agreed to wake. The old men called her stubborn. The children called her the girl who talked to the sea.

On the morning the bell at the lighthouse rang without a hand on it, she was already a mile out, hauling a net heavy with nothing but weed. Something surfaced beside the hull, grey and sleek, and then another, and then a third, all leaping in a line as if they were writing a sentence across the water. The first one turned on its back, looked up at her with one round eye, and sank. The others followed it down.
She rowed home without the catch. At the quay, the harbour master was waiting with his hat in his hands, because the lighthouse bell had rung for the drowned, and no one in Vell had drowned that night. He asked what she had seen. Ilse pulled a strip of pale weed from the net and laid it on the stones between them. Pressed into it, faint as a bruise, was the shape of a leaping animal, its tail curled like a question.
The next morning she sailed out again, and the water rose to meet her, and she never once broke the tide rule after that.
