Small dot tattoos on fingers

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows two hands pressed flat on a white surface, viewed from above. Several fingers carry small, solid black dots placed on the side or top of the finger, each a few millimetres across. The black and grey tones and plain background keep the focus on the minimal dot placements.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Scallow Bay would sail without Ivy Penhallow's dots, though most of them would not say so aloud. She kept a small black mark at each place where a bearing had been taken true, the way other women kept thimbles or pins, and she had been adding to them since the year the Scarrow ledge took her father's boat. Her brother Tam called the marks a conceit. Ivy called them the lighthouse she carried about with her.

The night before the Lark went out for the herring, Tam came to the net-loft with a bottle and a grievance. He had been caught off the ledge that morning and had steered by the wrong mark, and he wanted to know which of her clever dots had lied to him. Ivy laid both hands flat on the bench, palms down, the way you would smooth a chart. She showed him how the dots ran along the knuckles like soundings: one for the rock, one for the channel, one for the bell buoy that the council kept moving, and one for the harbour mouth, which she had only inked that morning.

"Rock, channel, bell, home," she said, touching each mark with the nail of her thumb. Tam saw that the last dot sat on the smallest finger of her left hand, and that the skin around it was still pink and tender. He stared at it for a long time. Then he pressed his own hand down on the bench beside hers, fingers spread, and went looking for the place where the sea would ask him to turn.
