Single fine line across an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single thin black line crosses the inner wrist of an outstretched hand, with the forearm in a sparkly cream sleeve at the left. The line is crisp and even in weight, with no shading or fill. The image is softly lit against a pale neutral background, with the red nail polish as the main colour accent.

The mooring line is thinner than it ought to be, and you know it, because your uncle Teddy always said a barge is only as honest as the rope tied to her. You stand on the gunwale at the lock tail with rain coming in sideways and the bow knocking softly against the wall, and you tell yourself the knot will hold until the sluices are full.

Teddy's rule was simple. You make fast to the bollard, never to the boat's own rail, and you count every turn out loud so the water can hear you agree. He taught you that on the Oxford run when you were nine, sitting on the cabin roof with a flask of stewed tea between you, and he never once raised his voice. He just took the end out of your hands and made you do it again until the hitch lay flat and quiet, a single dark line running from the bollard to the bow.
Today the gates groan open and the water begins to drop, and the line goes tight as a plucked string. You take a turn round the iron post, then another, counting aloud though nobody is there to hear. The rope burns through your grip. You could hold on. You could shout for the lock keeper. Instead you let the end run free, and the barge slides out from the wall with the cat yowling in the cabin and the rain washing the cabin roof clean.
By the time you reach the bridge she is a grey shape turning slowly in the current, and the rope trails behind her like a pencil stroke drawn across brown water. Teddy would have shaken his head. You stand on the towpath, watching her drift, and you find you are smiling.
