Edie had the twine in her teeth when the gate went, so she spat it out and told the dog to hush. The allotment at the end of Harrow Lane was all bolted lettuce and leaning sweetcorn by August, and the tomato canes her father had staked in April were starting to lean with them. He had always tied them with a single loop, never a knot, so the plant could breathe and you could undo it when it outgrew you.

Edie didn't answer. She unspooled a length of green twine and wound it twice round the first finger of her left hand, the way she used to wind it round her dad's wrist when he needed help with the reel. Then she took the stub of carpenter's pencil from her apron and marked the cord above and below the wrap: a solid dot for the man who had taught her this, and a hollow ring for herself, the one she still hadn't filled in.

She worked the loop until it sat loose on the cane, then pulled the knot free and let the end drop into the bed. Mrs Abernathy watched her from the path and said nothing. By the time the light went orange over the shed, the bean shoots had found the twine and begun climbing it, one curl at a time, towards the gap she had left.
