Geometric finger tattoos on two hands
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two pale hands rest on a white fur surface, with small black tattoos across several fingers. The designs include arrows, triangles, chevrons, a star-like burst and short strokes and dots. The linework is thin and crisp, with no shading, and the simple layout is spread across the finger joints.

"The wind won't hold past noon, so the boats stay in," Ida said, and tapped the arrow on my middle finger, the one that pointed back toward the harbour wall. I had been learning the marks since spring, when my aunt Morag first let me hold the slate with the tide table scratched across it. Every shape on our knuckles meant something to the men at Sule Harbour. A chevron was a squall coming in from the west. A triangle standing on its point meant the lifeboat house was open. The star-burst was the one nobody liked, because it meant someone was missing and the bell would ring.

The island had no telephone wire worth trusting, only a crackling radio that the postman forgot to switch on. So the women kept the code alive. Morag had pricked her own hands with a sewing needle and Indian ink the winter her husband went under near Stac Dubh, and she never once explained the lines to anyone who asked, only to the girls who came after her.
On the last morning of my training, Ida pressed my hand flat against the cold window. "Read me the dots," she said. Four short dots, a line, then a chevron. I read it aloud, slowly, the way she had taught me. Out past the skerries a single red sail was turning in, and it was heading the wrong way for the tide.
I took the ink pot from the shelf and warmed the needle in the lamp flame. The line I drew across my own knuckle came out thin and steady, and the arrow I set beside it pointed straight at the rocks. Ida nodded once and went to ring the bell.
