Tiny dotted bow on the wrist

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the fingers loosely curled, showing the inner wrist. A very small black tattoo, built from separate dots, sits on the wrist and forms a simple bow-like shape. The soft, warm lighting and shallow focus leave the background fabric blurred, keeping attention on the tattoo.

The Tuesday boat brought the string, and the string brought the parcels, and on Inish Dorcha that was the whole week's news. I sorted them on the post room counter with the stove ticking behind me, reading the addresses aloud out of habit because nobody else was there to hear. Tins for Glasgow. A christening gown folded in tissue for Leeds. A pair of boots for a man in Boston who had not set foot on the island since 1961 but still sent for his mother's cooking pot every spring.

Old Sean Doherty brought his parcel in himself, which he never did. He stood at the counter turning his cap in both hands and asked if I could tie it proper, the way his wife used to. She had finished every parcel with a bow so small it looked pricked in with a pin, two loops no bigger than a fingernail. He wanted one on the brown paper for his daughter's birthday. I had never managed it. My bows came out lumpy and loud.

So I sat with the parcel and the spool and tried, and the first three came apart in my fingers. On the fourth I stopped thinking about the knot and let my hands go slow, the way you hold a sleeping child's hand so as not to wake it, and the loops settled into a shape I could trust. Sean looked at it for a long time. "Aye," he said. "That's her."

He paid in coins, left his cap on the counter by mistake, and walked back down the hill to the pier with his hands empty. I kept the spool. Some mornings I still tie a bow that small, just to see whether it will hold.
