Small dotted bow on wrist
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black tattoo of a bow, built from fine dots and short lines, sitting on the wrist. The hand is curled loosely, with the fingers folded towards the palm, and the skin is lit softly. The background is a pale beige fabric with a textured pattern, which keeps the focus on the small ink design.

On the ninth floor of Halden House the lift only moved when you sang to it, and Mrs Oyelaran was the only one left who knew the verses. The children from the flats below would wait in the lobby with their shopping until someone hummed the right note, and the doors would sigh open like an old dog.

One winter a boy called Tobias lost the blue ribbon his mother had tied to the pram handle, a bow no bigger than a moth. He searched the stairwell, the bins, the car park where the wind lifted crisp packets into the air like small grey birds. All he found were dots of frost along the railings, so he counted them, because counting was what his gran did when she could not sleep.
On the twelfth night the lift stopped between floors and the light went out. In the dark a voice said, quite plainly, that the ribbon had gone up to the roof to tie a knot in the wind, and that a building without a knot in it forgets which way is down. Tobias climbed the last flight with his phone torch. He found the ribbon snagged on the aerial, frayed to threads, and he pinched them together one stitch at a time until something small and dark held its loops in the cold.
The lift came back at six. Mrs Oyelaran had waited in the lobby all night with her hand on the doors and said nothing about it. She only asked whether the bow had held, and when he showed her the little knot pinned to his coat cuff, she nodded and told him that was how you knew a thing had been mended properly: you could still see exactly where it had been pulled apart.
