Small dotwork bow tattoo in black ink on the wrist, with another hand resting against it on a soft peach background.

Tiny dotted bow on the wrist

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A very small bow is formed from black dots on the wrist of a light-skinned arm. The dots are spaced to draw a simple looped bow shape with two short tails, and the ink is black with no shading. A blurred hand rests at the top of the frame on a warm, soft-focus fabric, leaving the tattoo as the sharp point of interest.

The raffia has been soaking since dawn, and you can tell from the damp smell in the shed that Aunt Fen has already been through the first row of grafts. She never trusts you to tie the knots tight enough, so you work the whips slowly, one at a time, twisting the soft strands until the join between stock and scion sits snug and the bark stops weeping.

By noon the orchard is loud with wasps working the windfalls under the Discovery trees, and the light comes through the leaves in coins. Fen walks the rows with a tin of wax and a pencil stub, marking each tied graft with a loop of thread so she can find it again in spring. You want to mark your own, so you make a small bow at the end of your last tie, two short tails trailing, and she laughs and says ribbons are for the ones that take, not the ones that look nice.

In April you come back alone with the ladder and find the one you tied yourself. The raffia has gone grey and loose, but under it a green bud has split the bark, tight as a closed fist. You stand there longer than you need to, holding the ladder steady, until a wasp drifts past your ear and you remember to breathe.

Fen never said it might not take. She just kept walking the rows, and you kept tying.
