Small dotted bird on the hand
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a bird or insect-like shape sits on the back of a hand near the wrist. It is built entirely from separate black dots, with the denser clusters forming the body and the outstretched wings. The soft, blurred background shows another hand and fingers, and the shallow focus keeps the tattoo as the clear point of interest.

Mrs Penhallow had kept the Gull's Rest for thirty-one winters and never once let a guest pay in advance, because the sea took men before their bills were settled. When the tern came in off the rocks that October, it walked straight across the flagstones of the back kitchen and stood beside the bread crock as if it had booked a room.

Nobody in Porthgwidden thought much of birds that came indoors. But the tern had a way of tapping the flour with its beak, and where it tapped, the flour kept a pattern of small black specks, like pepper dropped from a height. Mrs Penhallow swept them up each morning. Each morning there were more, and they gathered into a shape she knew from the lifeboat tide tables: two wings held out flat, a body dense as a knot in driftwood.
On the last night of the month the lodger from number four came down in his coat and asked whether the sea was calm enough for a crossing to the Hanging Stones. She told him no. He went anyway, and the tern followed him out past the breakwater, low and steady, dropping dots on the water that the tide would not take.
They found his boat the next spring, turned over in the cove. Mrs Penhallow kept the crock. When she lifted the lid, the flour was clean, and in its middle sat one black dot, neat and small, waiting for somebody to count it.
