Interlocking loop symbol on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of several looping shapes that overlap and interlock, forming a symmetrical, abstract design. The lines are solid and even, with no shading, and the ink is set against pale skin on the side of a bare foot with toes visible at the top right. The background is a blurred indoor scene with a cardboard sign at the top left.

The net had torn along the lead line in the night, a ragged mouth three fathoms wide, and Nell Harrow sat on an upturned crab pot with the twine across her knees and did not look up when Jack came down the slip. He stood over her with his hood still up and the wind pulling at his oilskins. "Mother's knot," he said. "Not the plain one. The other."

She knew which he meant. Their mother had taught them a loop that lay two ways at once, a single cord doubled back through itself and drawn tight until three rounds sat locked, each one holding the next, so that no hand could pull one free without the others following. Nell had tied it into every mesh her mother ever mended and had never once asked what it was for. The net loft smelled of tar and damp wool, and gulls argued on the roof.
She worked the cord through the frayed hole, looped it over, drew it tight, and felt the loops take the strain and hold. Jack crouched beside her and watched her fingers the way he used to watch their mother's, as if the knot might undo itself if he blinked. Beyond the breakwater the boats were out, grey on grey, and the tide was turning.
When she finished she bit the cord and handed him the needle. "Gets tighter when it's pulled," she said. "That's the whole trick." He turned the mended panel over, found the three locked rings on the back of it, and for a long moment neither of them spoke. Then he hung it on the rail with the others and went down to meet the boats.
