The snow had shut the road below Hollin Gate for three days, and by the third night the only guests left were a sheep farmer snoring in the snug and a clockmaker who would not stop talking about escapements. You were counting coal in the back kitchen when the bell over the yard door began to swing, though the latch stayed down and nobody's boots had crossed the step.

Aunt Mags had hung the carved angel above that door forty years ago, a scrap of sycamore with wings scrolled at the tips like the curl on a fiddle head. She said it kept the draughts civil. Tonight it was turning on its string, slow as a clock hand, and when you lifted the lamp you saw the wings had been freshly painted, the black still tacky at the curls.

You went out with the lantern. The snow had stopped and the yard lay blue and flat, but a line of prints ran from the gate to the step, small and bare, and stopped exactly where the carving would have hung. Beside them, pressed into the drift, were two shallow loops, one on each side, as if something with wings had knelt there and then thought better of it.

In the morning the plough came up the lane, and the clockmaker paid his bill with a silver watch he swore was not his. You hung the angel back on its nail, wings still damp, and found its string knotted in the way Mags always tied hers. You left the latch up that night, and the bell rang twice before dawn, as if someone were counting you in.
