The snow has shut the Hollin road since Tuesday, so the carrier's cart is still sat in our yard with its shafts pointing at the sky. Mother says I am not to write to you about the mare, but you always liked the mare best, so here it is. She came up the hill out of the white on Wednesday night, a grey with a dark mane, walking as if she had an appointment. Nobody had brought her. There was no saddle, only a strip of red wool knotted at her withers.

Father held a lantern to her flank to look for a brand and found instead a mark, a heart drawn into the coat so finely it looked like frost, with the curve of her own shoulders bending round it. Mrs Pardoe swore it was a sign of luck, and Tom the ostler swore it was a sign of the devil, and they argued over the hay until the bell rang for supper. I was the one who scraped the ice from her hooves. She let me, which she does not let anyone do.

Yesterday the pass opened for an hour and a rider came down it on foot, asking after a grey mare. He carried a letter, sodden, the ink run to blue, and it said only: keep her warm, she carried me home. He would not give his name. He sat by the fire until the light went, and when the stars came out he walked back up towards the pass with a lantern and no horse at all.

This morning there was a fresh print in the snow beside the stable door, a boot, and no tracks leading away. The mare is standing in her stall with her head over the gate, looking at the hill. I have tied the red wool back on her. Come home when the road clears, and bring that lantern. I think she is waiting to be asked where we are going.
