Small elephant outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant is drawn in a single thin black outline, facing right with its trunk raised and a simple dot for the eye. The design sits on the side of the ankle against smooth, lightly lit skin. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with a patterned fabric visible at the bottom of the frame.

Nobody in Porthgarran could agree whose elephant it was, so when the tea clipper unloaded a crate marked for no one, Mrs Tregear carried the little tin beast home under her shawl and set it on her kitchen sill, facing the water. It was no bigger than a teacup, with a dot punched in for an eye and its trunk lifted high, as if it had just heard its name called from across the bay.

The women of the harbour took to turning to it on mornings when the boats went out past the breakwater. Old Jory, who mended nets on the slip, said an elephant never forgets the road home, and so the tin one had been made to remember it for them. If a boat was late, Mrs Tregear turned the elephant round to face the town, and the whole street knew to put the kettle on and stop pretending they were not frightened.

The February gale took the Morwenna's mast and three days of daylight. On the fourth morning Mrs Tregear woke before the light, went to the sill, and found the elephant already facing the town, though she had not touched it. She stood in her nightdress and watched the fog thin over the gap in the rocks, and then the Morwenna's sail came through it, grey and patched and leaning.

Ned came up the harbour steps with salt in his beard and his boots full of water. The first thing he did, before he would take his mother's hand, was lift the tin elephant from the sill and turn it back towards the sea, trunk raised, so that whatever was out there could see the way in.
