Conch shell tattoo on an arm

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a conch shell with its spiral opening and tapered tip, drawn in thin dark linework. Soft dotwork stippling shades the shell body and inner curve, giving it gentle depth against the pale skin. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with a knitted jumper patterned in cream, grey and red visible on the right.

The horn had been Maud's job for eleven winters, and on the morning the fog came down thick over Saltmere harbour she was late to the wall, her boots still unlaced, the great pink conch knocking against her hip on its frayed cord. Below the mole the herring boats were already feeling their way out, their lanterns swinging like drowned stars. Old Crispin Vane, who kept the tide book, stood at the steps with his hands tucked into his coat and didn't bother to scold her.

"Your gran held a breath longer than anyone I ever knew," he said. "Do that and the shell will carry."

She pressed her mouth to the narrow tip and blew. The note came out thin and wrong, a gull with a bad throat. She tried again, counted to nine the way her gran used to, and felt the spiral warm under her fingers like something alive. The sound went out into the grey and didn't come back. Then, faint and from very far off, a second note answered her, rising from somewhere beyond the breakwater where no one had lived in a hundred years.

The boats turned. One by one the lanterns swung back towards the harbour wall, as if the sea had simply changed its mind. Crispin took off his cap and said nothing at all.

Later, when the last hull had bumped against the stones, Maud sat on the steps and turned the shell over in her palm. Grains of wet sand had lodged in the whorls, dark as the stippled dots that shaded its inner curve. She lifted it to her mouth once more and, holding her breath until her chest ached, sent back the answer.
