Elephant and heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a cartoon-style elephant with its trunk curled upwards towards a tiny heart. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits on the outer ankle against a pale background of carpet and a patterned fabric.

Alf Pryce had worked nights on the children's ward for thirty-one years, and in all that time the lift had never once stopped on its own. So when it opened at ten past three on a wet Tuesday and a small grey elephant stepped out, he put down his mop and said, mostly to himself, 'Right, then.'

It did not charge or trumpet. It walked the length of the corridor on its soft feet, past the drinks machine and the sleeping chairs, its trunk curled up towards a red heart that hung in the air a hand's width above it, as if on a string nobody could see. At bay four a little girl called Ruby was awake and counting the holes in the ceiling tiles. The elephant stopped beside her bed and lowered its head until its trunk rested on the blanket.
Alf had heard the old stories from his nan, about creatures that came to mind the sick when the people who should were too tired to keep watch. He had always thought them nonsense. Still, he pulled the chair closer and sat. Ruby giggled, the elephant breathed out, and the heart drifted down and settled on her pillow, where it went pale and then was gone, the way breath goes off a window.
By six the elephant had gone, and the lift doors had closed behind it. Ruby's temperature was down. Alf's mop was still leaning against the wall where he had left it, and on the lino by the lift someone had left a single dry footprint, round and wide, shaped like a question nobody on the day shift wanted to ask.
