Dashed coat hanger on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a coat hanger drawn in thin, dashed black linework sits on the side of the neck, with a curling line below it and a small cursive letter inside the hanger's frame. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the skin around it shows slight redness. The tight crop centres the tattoo against soft natural light with hair at the top edge of the frame.

Dear Tom, The big top came down in Lincoln on Tuesday with the rain already in it, and I spent the night on my knees in the wardrobe wagon picking pins out of the lion tamer's cape. You'll laugh, but I counted hangers the way Father counted sheep. Forty-one wooden, nine wire, and one brass that belonged to nobody.

The brass one hung off the end of the rail with a scrap of blue ribbon knotted round its neck, and under it lay a sleeve of grey wool with a cuff already tacked. Nobody on the fair would own up to it. Mrs Okafor swore she'd never seen it. Jim the ringmaster said it must have walked in with the new calliope man, who has a face like a wet Sunday and keeps his letters folded in his waistcoat.
I took the sleeve to the stitching lamp and found a single initial worked in black thread inside the cuff, an E curled like a hook. Along the bottom ran a long dashed line of stitches, as if whoever sewed it meant to lift the whole costume off the rail and carry it out into the dark with the hem trailing behind.
I hung it back where I found it, E facing out, and went to bed. This morning the wool was gone and the brass hanger was swinging empty, the blue ribbon tied in a neat bow. Tell Mother I'm well. Tell her the fair moves to Hull on Monday, and I'll write from there, if the hanger lets me.
