The crate came off the Tuesday ferry with its lid nailed down and a label that read only ELEPHANT, THIS WAY UP. Nobody on Inish Carrow had ever seen an elephant, and you were the one sent up the cliff path with the handcart because your uncle's knee had gone again. The wind off the Atlantic leaned on the crate the whole way, as though it wanted it back.

Inside, wrapped in oilcloth and straw, was a calf no bigger than a collie, grey as wet slate, with a single dot of ink for an eye and a trunk curled up as if it were about to ask a question. Tied to one ear was a card that said PAMELA, and under that, in a different hand, Do not let her near the sea.

You kept her in the byre with the hens for a week. She ate a bucket of turnips and followed you about the way the goat did. On the eighth morning the tide went out further than anyone living could remember, leaving a pale road of sand all the way to the Crowhead rocks, and she walked out along it with her trunk held high, straight toward the grey line where the ferry came from.

You ran after her the way you would after a lamb, shouting a name you had only just learned. At the end of the sand she stopped, lifted her trunk, and sounded once, a note like a foghorn played on a fiddle. Then the water turned. When you got back to the byre the straw was dry and the door was open, and on the whitewashed wall someone had drawn a small elephant facing the sea, with the same single dot for an eye.
