Small elephant outline on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant is drawn in a single black outline on the side of the torso, just below the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the figure sits alone against plain pale skin. The raised arm and hand with black nail polish frame the upper part of the photo, and the background is dark.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had already taken the upper track by the time the menagerie's last cart stalled at Caspar's Hut, and the showman, a man with a gold tooth called Rudi Vance, was shouting at the mules to go on without the elephant. You are the one who doesn't go. Nobody asked you to. The beast's name is Mabel, and she has stood in the yard since dawn with her ears folded forward like a pair of wet coats, refusing the ramp.

You bring her a bucket of bran and she takes it politely, without looking at you. The pass is four hours up in weather that turns in less time than that. Vance has left you a purse, a lantern and a promise that the carter from the valley will fetch her in spring. You know nobody comes up in spring.

So you walk. Mabel follows one step behind your left shoulder, her feet pressing the packed snow in prints the size of dinner plates. Halfway up the wind drops and the whole range goes quiet, and the only sounds are her breath and the tick of ice on your collar. Near the cairn at the top she stops and lifts her trunk toward the far side, where the valley has gone to cloud, and she waits so long that you begin to suspect she is the one doing the guiding.

On the descent you pass a ring of old stones with the hoof prints of something larger pressed into the scree. Mabel steps over them without breaking stride. When you reach the lower meadow the snow thins to rain, and a lamp is burning in a window you had forgotten existed. You turn back once. She is standing very still at the edge of the trees, dark against the grey, the way a line looks when someone has drawn it once and decided it was finished.
