Small elephant silhouette on the hip
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black elephant silhouette with its trunk raised sits on the lower abdomen near the hip. The shape is filled with flat black ink with no visible shading or internal detail, and there is no colour. The photograph is a close crop of the torso, with the tattoo placed off centre to the right beside the open waistband of pale denim jeans.

Sit down, you lot, and mind the nets. My grandfather used to say the sea keeps its own accounts, and the only creature it ever paid back in full was the one that lifted its head to call for help. Let me tell you about the Marigold out of Hartlepool, the winter of the big blow, and the little black elephant painted on her bow by a man who had never once seen the real thing.

Her skipper, Tom Ferriby, was a quiet man who bought his paint from a chandler in Grimsby because the shop kept a tin of the blackest tar anyone had ever mixed. He said elephants never forget, and a boat with a memory was a boat that came home. So every spring he daubed that small shape on the bow, trunk raised like a man hailing across a harbour, and every spring the Marigold came back with her hold full.
The winter it all went wrong, the glass fell so fast the gulls came inland screaming. Ferriby took her out anyway because the rent was due and the cod were running. Off the Dogger Bank the sea stood up grey as slate, the lamp in the wheelhouse guttered out, and someone shouted that they had lost the harbour mouth. It was the black shape on the bow that the lantern caught, pointing them home through the spray.
They limped in at dawn with one man hauled up on a rope and the paint scraped near to bare wood. Ferriby never repainted it. He said the trunk was still raised, and that was the only part that mattered.
