Small feather and crescent moon finger tattoos

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a sheet of cream paper beside a dark blue ink drawing of a mandala, feathers, an eye and a triangle. On the fingers, a small feather tattoo and a tiny crescent moon are drawn in simple, thin black linework. The composition places the hand at the left and the drawing across the right, with silver and turquoise rings visible on the fingers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bird-seller at Halvard's Col never sold a bird he hadn't first drawn. He sat on the wall of the refuge with a pen and a sheet of cream paper weighted by a stone, and every dawn he made another wheel of rays around a blind eye, the way the old pass-keepers had taught him. I carried his paper up the path that autumn, because my mule was the only animal who would climb past the snowline without complaint.

He said the eye was for the weather. Drawn straight, it brought the cloud down off the ridge in one grey sheet and you had to wait. Drawn with a crescent beside it, sleeping, the moon could be trusted to light the scree at night. I laughed at him. Then the girl from the lower farm came up one evening with split boots and asked for something to carry over the ridge, and he took a quill from his coat and pressed it into her palm without a word.

We walked the high route in the dark, the three of us and the mule, following the little triangles he had painted on the boulders. Feathers lay on the path in pairs, and at each one she bent and touched it. Near the top the wind dropped so suddenly I heard my own breath. The moon came round the shoulder of the mountain, thin as a parenthesis, and the eye on the paper in my pack opened, I swear, as if it had been waiting for exactly that light.

We reached the far side before the sun. At the cairn the girl gave the feather back to me and said it was lighter than when she had taken it. I still have the paper. The wheel has faded to the colour of an old bruise, but the eye is open, and I have never once drawn it straight.
