A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hall key hung on Mrs Pardoe's string, and she would not hand it over until the last of them had signed the book. Forty-one names had come back to Ashcombe for the reunion, most of them greyer than the photographs pinned up along the corridor. The pen she gave them was a crow's quill, cut by her husband the winter before he died, and it left a black mark that dried a shade darker than ink.

Tom Harrow was the last to sign. He stood a long while over the page, then wrote his name and beneath it the year he had left the village, and the quill trembled a little in his fingers. 'You kept the schoolroom all this time,' he said. 'Somebody had to,' she said. 'Every child who leaves here takes one feather with them, for the road. Whoever never comes back for the reunion owes the hall one back in return.' He laughed, not unkindly, and asked what happened to those who owed.

She told him nothing happened to them. The hall simply kept their names, and waited, and the door was left on the latch every year in case. Then she turned the key in the lock, and the old oak groaned the way it always had. When the others had gone down the lane in their twos and threes, Tom was still on the step, turning something dark over in his hand, and the pale shaft of a feather caught the last of the light before he tucked it inside his coat and walked off towards the station.
